Whirlpool F7E1 Shift Actuator Guide
Diagnostic Summary
On Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana Vertical Modular Washers (VMW), the shift actuator (Part # W10913953) performs two critical functions: its synchronous motor mechanically moves the splutch transmission between agitation and spin modes, while its integrated optical sensor tracks motor pulley rotational speed. When internal nylon gears bind, the drive motor burns out, or the optical sensor fails to transmit RPM pulses to the main control board, the washer triggers error code F7E1 (Tachometer Fault) or F7E5 (Shifter Fault), leaving clothes soaking wet or causing the motor to hum without agitating or spinning.
1. Verify Washer Model Compatibility
To confirm that your top-load washer uses the W10913953 shift actuator assembly, locate the manufacturer rating plate on your appliance.
- Top-Load Washers: Lift the washer lid and locate the rating plate on the rear frame under the lid hinge, or check the rear backsplash panel near the water supply connectors.
Enter your washer model number to confirm direct fitment for OEM Shift Actuator W10913953.
Database covers over 2,200+ Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana, and Crosley top-load platforms.
2. Symptoms & Service Diagnostic Mode Verification
Before replacing components, retrieve the active fault codes from the washer memory to confirm an F7E1 or F7E5 diagnostic flag.
Entering Service Diagnostic Mode (Cycle Knob Sequence)
With the washer in standby mode (plugged in, all LED lights extinguished), turn the central cycle knob through the following reset and entry sequence within 6 seconds:
- Turn the knob 1 click counter-clockwise (CCW) to clear previous entries.
- Turn 3 clicks clockwise (CW).
- Turn 1 click counter-clockwise (CCW).
- Turn 1 click clockwise (CW).
Verification: All status LEDs will blink in unison. Turn the selector knob clockwise until only the DONE status LED illuminates, then press START to read fault codes.
| Suspect Component | Failure Probability | Observed Symptom & Error Code | Field Test Procedure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shift Actuator (W10913953) | 75% | Washer hums or clicks 3 times and halts; drum fails to agitate or spin; fault codes F7E1 (Tachometer/Speed Sensor) or F7E5 (Shifter State Failure). | Measure actuator synchronous motor resistance across terminals 1 & 2 (2.0k–3.5k Ω). Check optical sensor 5VDC pulsing on harness when rotating drive pulley by hand. |
| Splutch Cam / Drive Belt | 15% | Loud scraping noise during spin; drive belt worn, loose, or oil-fouled; splutch teeth rounded off. | Visually inspect splutch cam teeth for rounding; verify drive belt tension (deflection should not exceed 1/2 inch under moderate finger pressure). |
| Main Control Board PCB | 10% | New shift actuator installed, but the board fails to output 120VAC shift commands or interpret optical pulses. | Test 120VAC command output at connector J16 on main control board during active wash and spin diagnostic steps. |
3. Repair Cost Analysis: DIY vs. Professional Service
Replacing the shift actuator is an accessible under-chassis repair requiring only a 5/16″ and 1/4″ nut driver without disconnecting water plumbing. Review the direct expense comparison below:
| Expense Category | Professional Appliance Repair | DIY In-House Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic / Dispatch Fee | $95.00 – $135.00 | $0.00 |
| Standard Labor Rate (1 Hour Minimum) | $110.00 – $170.00 | $0.00 (15–25 mins DIY) |
| Part Retail Markup | $65.00 – $95.00 | $28.99 (Factory Direct) |
| Total Estimated Expense | $270.00 – $400.00 | $28.99 |
| Turnaround Time | 3 to 7 Days (Service Scheduling) | Same Day Dispatch / 20 Min Fix |

5. Step-by-Step Shift Actuator Replacement Instructions
Required Tools
- 5/16-inch hex head nut driver (for drive pulley shield)
- 1/4-inch hex head nut driver (for actuator mounting screws)
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Painter’s tape or masking tape (to secure lid)
- Work gloves
Tape the washer lid securely to the top deck using painter’s tape. Carefully slide the washer forward and tilt the machine backward, resting the top rear console securely against the laundry room wall at a 45-degree angle to access the bottom chassis.
Locate the black plastic splash shield covering the motor and gearcase pulley. Using a 5/16″ nut driver, remove the two hex screws holding the shield to the gearcase bracket and remove the cover.
Locate the shift actuator mounted adjacent to the splutch transmission assembly. Press the center locking release tab on the multi-conductor wire harness and pull the connector free from the actuator socket.
Using your 1/4″ nut driver, remove the two hex mounting screws securing the shift actuator body to the gearcase. Gently pull the actuator downward to disengage the white nylon shifter cam arm from the splutch slider ring groove.
Align the nylon cam arm of the new W10913953 actuator into the splutch slider ring collar. Position the actuator body flush against the gearcase mounting bosses. Reinstall the two 1/4″ hex screws and tighten firmly without over-tightening into the aluminum gearcase housing.
Plug the wire harness connector firmly into the new actuator until the locking tab clicks securely. Reinstall the black plastic drive shield with the two 5/16″ screws. Return the washing machine to an upright position and remove the tape from the lid.
6. Mandatory Post-Installation Calibration Cycle
Whenever the shift actuator is replaced, you must run the automatic calibration mode so the control board microprocessor can map the precise mechanical engagement travel of the new shifter arm:
- Reconnect the power cord to the 120V outlet and open the water supply valves. Ensure the tub is completely empty.
- Enter Service Diagnostic Mode using the selector knob (1 click CCW, 3 clicks CW, 1 click CCW, 1 click CW).
- Rotate the knob clockwise until only the RINSE status LED is lit (indicates Calibration Cycle, Mode 04).
- Press START. The washer will lock the lid, shift between agitate and spin modes, and rotate the basket for 2 to 4 minutes.
- When calibration completes successfully, the lid unlocks and all status LEDs extinguish. Your washer is fully recalibrated and ready for laundry.
